Limestone Tiles

Limestone is a natural stone, formed from animal shells and other living organisms compressed on the seabed. This is the reason why some limestone tiles contain fossil fragments. It is commonly found in subtle colours, such as ivory and beige but is also available in dark reddish and brown shades.

Limestone tiles have gained popularity due to their matte finish. This is particularly true of honed limestone, a matte, non-slip tile. In saying that, limestone tiles are available in a range of finishes to suit any interior. For traditional styles, polished limestone offers a bright, shining surface, similar to porcelain and marble. Tumbled limestone, with its rounded corners and edges, conveys a more vintage feel. It is therefore often fitted in older-style buildings. However, when done correctly, tumbled limestone in a modern space works extremely well. For outdoor use, brushed limestone, with its completely matte texture works perfectly as the finish is not as detailed.

Limestone tiles can often be found in kitchens, bathrooms and living room areas. They are not only a beautiful choice for floors, but can offer an elegant and classy feel when fitted on walls or backsplashes. Homeowners opt for limestone tiles for a number of reasons:

  • Cost: Compared to other tiles, such as marble and granite, limestone tends to be less expensive
  • Durability: If properly sealed and maintained, limestone will last a lifetime
  • Aesthetics: Limestone creates a natural, rustic but sophisticated atmosphere
  • Environment: This material is environmentally friendly due to its short and simple manufacturing process
  • Safety: Matte finishes on limestone reduce the risk of slips and falls. It is also a non-flammable material and so is perfect for use in kitchens
  • Comfort: Unlike other tiles, the softness of limestone makes it very comfortable to walk on
  • Value: For real-estate investments, this luxurious, long-lasting material adds value to any property
  • Cleanliness: Limestone is resistant to mould and bacteria, making it perfectly suited for use in bathrooms

When considering limestone tiles, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, because of the stone's porous nature, limestone should be re-sealed once a year to maintain its quality. Secondly, for areas of high traffic, darker limestone tends to be more hardwearing. A darker stone with colour variation also hides marks better, which is a huge bonus when kids or pets are running about!
