Porcelain is a dense, impervious, fine-grained, smooth tile. It is formed of quartz, clay and feldspar.
Due to its water absorption rate of 0.5% or lower, porcelain tiles are suitable for use in areas of high-moisture, such as showers, bath tubs and pools. Compared to ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles are more impervious to water, harder and more durable. They are highly resistant against chipping and scratching. In the instance a tile does chip, porcelain tiles are the same colour all the way through and therefore, any chips are nearly unnoticeable. While they are more suited for outdoor use than ceramic tiles, natural stone would be the better option in this instance.
Porcelain tiles are more expensive to manufacture than ceramic tiles, which accounts for the general higher price-tag (approximately 40% more expensive than ceramic). They are also more difficult to cut and therefore, it is recommended that a professional is hired for installation. For a DIY-er, it is highly recommended that a wet tile saw is used for cutting porcelain. Despite the increased purchase and installation costs, porcelain is the most popular tile option chosen today.
At SL Interiors, we stock a range of porcelain tiles, in different colours and sizes. Check out our full collection here or drop into our showroom, located at Unit H6, Swords Enterprise Park, Co. Dublin.
